US citizens put on global travel alert following death of Osama bin Laden

The US State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert to all US citizens following the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, warning of "enhanced potential" for anti-American violence. Sources state that authorities fear a possible counterattack by Al-Qaida and its affiliates.

The US also put its embassies on alert, warning Americans of al-Qaeda reprisal attacks after bin Laden was killed in a firefight with US forces deep inside Pakistan today. The alert said Americans living or traveling abroad, particularly in areas that have been hit by anti-American violence in the past, should limit travel outside their home and avoid large gatherings.
